Compare Green Cleaners to the Hazards of Chemical-Laden Cleaning Products
Green cleaners are made without toxic chemicals.
The definition of toxic is “Of or caused by poison; poisonous”.
There are lots of chemicals in ordinary household cleaners that could be really dangerous. Compare them to safe, green cleaners.
But no one knows exactly how dangerous because of the eighty thousand chemicals registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – most have not been tested for safety.
The government doesn’t require most chemicals to be listed anywhere on product labels.
While we don’t know the full potential danger of many of these chemicals, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Get rid of the potential problem cleaners that are marked “Danger” or “Poison” or those containing chlorine bleach and ammonia. Replace them with green cleaners that you know do not contain harmful chemicals.
Have you ever considered how odd it is that there are warning labels on cleaning products? They’re supposed to be ridding your home of bad stuff, not adding to it! And the labels on cleaning products don’t even tell you about most of the really bad stuff that’s inside them. That's why you need a brand of green cleaners you can trust and know what they contain.
The government only requires companies to list “chemicals of known concern” on their labels. The fact is that the government has no idea whether most of the chemicals used in everyday cleaning products are safe because it doesn’t test them, and it doesn’t require manufacturers to test them either. You have to check out green cleaners, too. You have to find a brand that will tell you what's in them.

What are you accomplishing when you clean your home, your laundry, etc? What are you doing to the quality of the air you breathe in your home - your sanctuary from the outside world? What is left behind on your floors, your laundry, etc. after they have been ‘cleaned’?
How can these substances affect the health of all those in the household? Are there safe, non-toxic, green cleaners that can do the job?

Sad results due to toxic cleaners
• A 7 month old boy crawled through a puddle of spilled laundry bleach, giving him third-degree burns on 50% of his body with fumes burning his lungs. He died after 3 agonizing days.
• An 18 month old had to eat and breathe through tubes for 5 months and had at least 30 operations, due to dishwashing detergent.
Chemicals are now a common component of our cells!
Daily exposure slowly adds up, or stockpiles, in our cells, tissues, and organs until enough damage is done to trigger a symptom or
disease.
Are you using rubber gloves to clean? You should if you aren't using friendly green cleaners.

Here are more “dangers” lurking in your happy home:
Aerosols: Lots of household products come in aerosol form; air fresheners, window and counter cleaners, deodorants, hair spray, furniture polish, and more. What they spray (sometimes propelled by butane) can include formaldehyde, phenols, toluene, and phthalates, among other toxins or carcinogens. Aerosols like these can and do cause skin, eye, and throat irritation and may also damage your lungs.
Air Fresheners and Room Deodorizers
Their toxins can include naphthalene, terpenes, and dichlorobenzene, among others. They reduce lung function and possibly cause cancer. Just look at those words!
All-Purpose Cleaners
Many contain solvents and surfactants suspected of causing or aggravating asthma symptoms; phthalates; formaldehyde; and ethylene glycol butyl ether, which has been shown to cause reproductive problems such as testicular damage, reduced fertility, death of embryos, and birth defects in animal studies. I used to wonder why women are having so many problems getting pregnant these days. Now I think I know part of the problem.
Antibacterial Cleaners
Many contain
triclosan,
a chemical that may increase the resistance to antibiotics. We americans are taking too many antibiotics and when we really need them, they don't help us anymore.
Automatic Dishwashing Detergent
These products typically contain complex phosphates (banned in laundry detergent), which pollute waterways by fostering oxygen-depleting algae blooms, and chlorine, which can become a harmful vapor during the drying cycle. How dangerous to wash our dishes and eating utensils with toxic chemicals!
Carpet Cleaners

Toxic fumes, mainly naphthalene (a carcinogen), are especially dangerous to children who play on carpets after they’re cleaned. The majority of poison exposures from carpet and upholstery cleaners were for children under six. Fumes can also cause kidney and liver damage. Kids play on the floor so much. Just think how much of these fumes they are breathing into their little lungs!
Chlorine Bleach
This can cause severe irritation to the eyes and skin, and its vapor or mist can cause damage to the respiratory tract and aggravate asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory conditions. I don't know how many times in the past that I have sprayed this stuff in the shower, held my breath, and run into another room. I knew my throat was sore for 3 weeks afterward but I didn't think of another solution until my daughter told me about safe cleaners!
Degreasers
Many contain butyl cellosolve, a chemical that irritates mucous membranes. May also cause kidney or liver damage or depress the nervous system. Industrial degreasers are often diluted with kerosene, which can damage lungs and dissolve essential fatty tissue around cells. How awful! We are being harmed and don't even know it!
Dishwashing Liquid
Most include petroleum-based surfactants that stay around in the environment and fragrances stabilized with phthalates. This doesn't sound like a green cleaner. I didn't consider this to be a dangerous item in my home. Now I know better.
Disinfectants

May contain any of several toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde, cresols, ammonia, phenols, and chlorine bleach, all of which should be kept away from the skin and some of which can be hazardous to internal organs and the central nervous system. Also may contain triclosan, which may create resistance to bacteria. We all want our home as clean as we can make it, but there are other choices that are safe and your home is just as clean, without the danger!
See the safe cleaners I trust here.
One of the most dangerous products found in the home. Ingredients often include lye and sulfuric acid, both of which are severely caustic and corrosive to skin, airways, and eyes.
Floor and Furniture Polish
Usually contains cresols and petroleum distillates, which are toxic chemicals that can cause skin and eye irritation, along with damage to the central nervous system. Vapors can contaminate indoor air for days after use. I never thought about furniture polish being harmful until I researched!
Glass Cleaner
Some contain ammonia, a poison that can irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory system. Some also contain butyl cellosolve, which is potentially toxic. Not anything about this has evidence of being a green cleaner. There is a better way to clean windows and it is a whole lot cheaper, too!
Laundry Detergent

Many contain synthetic surfactants; fragrances can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions and often contain phthalates. Imagine these harmful chemicals next to our skin all the time!
Mold and Mildew Removers
Many of these products are essentially a mix of water and bleach, and other chemicals such as butyl cellosolve, with their inherent danger to the respiratory system. Some may also contain pesticides. Blood tests show high levels of pesticides in kids!
Oven Cleaners
Like drain cleaners, extremely dangerous because they can contain lye which can cause severe damage to eyes, skin, mucous membranes, mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. They can be fatal if swallowed. There is a safer way to get your oven clean.
Scouring Cleaners
Many contain butyl cellosolve, which can irritate mucous membranes and cause liver and kidney damage. Many brands also contain chlorine bleach and silica, an abrasive that can be dangerous if inhaled. I know of a scoring product that you can rub on your hands and it is safe, yet cleans as good as the bad stuff!
Toilet Cleaners
Many contain chlorine and hydrochloric acid, among other chemicals which can be harmful.
Tub, Tile, and Sink Cleaners
Many contain chlorine and may contribute to the formation of organochlorines, a dangerous class of compounds that can cause reproductive, endocrine, and
immune system
disorders. Many also contain phosphoric acid, which is corrosive and irritates eyes, lungs, and skin. Why take the chance of harming yourself? Switch to green cleaners and be safe!
