It's Your Choice: Antioxidant Dietary Supplements or Worthless Synthetic "vitamins"

Antioxidant Dietary Supplements may seem to be a boring subject but it isn’t boring about how much better you can feel if you are taking the right vitamins.

Our modern society has come to believe in the 'I want it now' and 'I don't really want to work to too hard at it' approach to virtually everything we so. In regards to health, we seem to think that we should be able to erase or correct years of poor dietary and lifestyle habits with a simple ‘take this pill’ or ‘have this surgery’. We are always looking for that ‘magic pill’ or ‘instant cure’ or the ‘easiest way out’. What’s worse, we often feel that we should be able to continue with all our negative/detrimental habits and the ‘magic pill’ should fix us despiteourselves. And, we expect that magic pill to work virtually instantly. If the headache is not gone within 10 minutes, the pill didn’t work or wasn’t strong enough.

How is it that we have come to believe that:

If we get headaches, we must be Aspirin deficient

If we are depressed, we must be Prozac deficient

Extremely active children, who have difficulty concentrating or sitting still, are Ritalin deficient

If we have aches and pains, we must be Advil deficient

Teenage girls who have menstrual issues are Birth Control Pill deficient

The cure for cancer is to cut and burn our tissues and overwhelm the body with drugs

Years of destructive and harmful habits should be ‘cured’ within days of taking the ‘magic pill’

Giving the body time (perhaps months, depending on the issue) to truly rebuild, repair, and heal itself through proper diet, lifestyle, and additional nutrient supplemental is too costly, time-consuming and just a scam away

The following was taken from an article called Big Pharma, Bad Karma

“We don’t have a health care system in this country. What we have is a disease treatment system.”

Like true drug dealers, Big Pharma makes it a point to promote dependency in its customers. The mission statement is simple:

Get people thinking about drugs as a first-line solution to physical problems. “You can’t manage your health on your own; you need us. You need us to design the drugs and test them in clinical trials. You need us to monitor your symptoms and adjust your dosage. You can’t possibly know your body on your own. You are powerless.” Ultimately, this systematic disempowerment produces the precise opposite of health; a weak, dependent and passive population. Hippocrates would be appalled.

“One of the first duties of the physician is to educate the masses not to take medicine.” William Osler The Principals and Practice of Medicine(1892)

Here are some facts that you won’t find advertised on most of the vitamin supplements at your local vitamin store:

The majority of commercial vitamin supplements are made up of synthetic vitamins

Synthetic vitamins do not perform the same functions in your body as vitamins found naturally in whole food

Many synthetic vitamins deplete your body of other nutrients and tax your kidneys before being excreted through your urine. Antioxidant dietary supplements that are made from whole foods and that are continually tested for purity are the safest and most proven effective vitamins you can buy. Those two things are important to me. Safety, of course. And if the vitamins aren’t even working, I’m wasting my time and money plus losing years that my body could be benefiting from the right vitamins.

I don’t want to discover when I’m 75 that my vitamins were passing through my body without being absorbed, and if they were absorbed, they did my body harm! Anyone who studies biochemistry learns that vitamins do not exist as single components that act on their own. Vitamins are made up of several different components – enzymes, co-enzymes, and co-factors– that must work together to produce their intended biologic effects.

Vitamins that are found naturally in whole foods come with all of their necessary components.

The majority of vitamins that are sold in pharmacies, grocery stores, and vitamin shops are synthetic vitamins, which are only isolated portions of the vitamins that occur naturally in food. If you choose to use nutritional supplements, it is in your best interest to use only those products that list actual foods as their ingredients rather than synthetic and isolated vitamins. While some synthetic and isolated vitamins have been shown to provide minimal health benefits, on the whole, most of them cause more harm than good and you are far better off spending your money on whole foods.

How can you tell a difference in supplements? You sure can't tell by looking at them. These two examples are different colors but you can't tell by color which is the better of the two. You have to do a little research to know what's in supplements and which ones are going to really benefit you.

One of the chief differences in whole food antioxidant dietary supplements vs “drug store” brands is what is not in the tablet. For example, the natural brands leave out artificial chemical colors, which is a good thing to do. Just about all brands contain tablet fillers and excipients, needed to physically hold the pill together. Since these will vary, the only way to find out exactly who uses what is to write to the company and find out.
